In many ways Spain is the garden of Europe. It produces and exports more fruit and vegetables than most other nations of the EU, grows more grapes and olives than any nation in the world, and has almost every climate and microclimate with the exception of tropical rainforest. The range of fruit and vegetables available to the average Spanish cook or housewife is enviable (they really don’t have any househusbands to speak of, more’s the pity – tsk tsk). And so envy them you will when you travel to Spain. Unless you take up housekeeping and cook for yourself, or get invited home to dinner by people who don’t want to overly impress you, you are going to be living chiefly on animal protein and fried potatoes. And mayonnaise, of course.
